"I am delayed"

I get it, Steve travels a lot. Traveling a lot means that he isn't going to be home for a lot of things. I get it. But, it still sucks. And, I know that I am not the only pilot wife that feels this way.

Last night we had a party at our house for Christmas. Steve still keeps in close touch with three other guys from college. All four guys are pilots. Two fly for a mainline carrier, one flies corporate, and one flies fractional ownership (these are my terms for the companies, whether they are right or wrong). Before kids we used to get together all the time, now that we all have kids (ranging from age 7 years to 5 months) it gets harder and harder to get together. But, last night we did. We were able to find one day where everyone was available for a couple hours.

Low and behold, one pilot was delayed and showed up as two families were leaving. His wife and daughter had come earlier so they were able to enjoy the party. I can't speak for my friend, but I am sure her heart sank when her husband called earlier that day and said "I am delayed". I know mine would have.

Knowing ahead of time that your husband is missing an event is one thing. But, to have your husband miss an event that you were expecting him to attend is a whole new thing. That is the worst. In your head you have this idea of an event and what it would be like, and then it changes...that is just the pits.

We understand that this is our life...this is our reality...this is the life we accept. But, that doesn't mean we can't have a little pity party for ourselves every once in awhile.

  1. I can totally relate! There's something about building up excitement of knowing he's going to be there for something and then the huge letdown/ fall from that high when at the last minute he can't make it that is makes you feel so crappy! I don't think a lot of people understand what that is like. I agree, it's different than just knowing ahead they can't come. At least then you never got excited about having them there in the first place.
