All I wanted was a f**king Blizzard!

8pm: Steve and I were on the highway, about one hour into our 2 1/2 hour drive.  You see, Steve and I just celebrated our 10-year anniversary with a trip to Jamaica.  6 wonderful nights at Couple Swept Away in Negril. While we were away, my mom was watching the kids at her house, so once our flight got in we had to go get the kids.

Steve was driving, I was shotgun.  We had dinner in ATL around 5p, so at this point in the evening I was getting hungry.

Steve, I think I want a blizzard. Knowing very well that a DQ was at the next exit.

As we were approaching the exit, Steve was not slowing down.  Hey, I want a Blizzard....

Are you serious?  I want to just get to your mom's...and she said she has food for us.

Yes, I do want a Blizzard. I am hungry.  Please pull over.

You bet I got my snickers blizzard.  And yes it tasted damn good.  But, the cost was silence in the car for the next 1 1/2 hours.

So, how does this relate to being a pilot wife, you ask?  My pilot had been traveling non-stop for the last 10 days (his 4-day bled directly into our vacation), and all he wanted was to be "home" for the night.  Pilots and their need to be home...this is what I am talking about....

As I was eating my delightful blizzard, I made the point to Steve that I will be damned if his job gets in the way of travel.  Because, if it did and he turned into a bitching beast about "wanting to be home" during our trips, it would make something that is so wonderful into something that sucks. I muttered under my breathe that this was going to be my next blog post.

T-minus about 3 weeks until our actual anniversary.  I am still brainstorming what to get Steve.  At a cookout with some neighbors, I was picking their brains.  In typical fashion, Steve wasn't around so I took advantage of the open discussion.  One husband suggested "some time away".  I smiled and acted like I took his suggestion to heart, although in my head I knew THAT wasn't going to happen.

The LAST thing Steve wants is "some time away" in yet another hotel in a city that he has been to 100 times before.  Ok, maybe he would get laid this time around...but, I assure you that he would rather get laid in his bed at home.

As I was muttering under my breath about this being my next blog post, I was thinking I could do my usual blog length.  But, I have to admit that I don't have much more to say about this topic.  I have written and re-written, but I keep circling the same point.  The point is very simple and straight forward...the more Steve is away from home, the more he craves to be home.  Fact.  And I am sure that most pilots flying the line follow the exact same path.  And once again, us pilot wives have to manage this fact and plan accordingly.

  1. Oh dear...I can relate. All I want for my birthday is a night at home in my underwear and a cold beer. What can I say. I'm easy to please.
